Item # SCP-8539

Object Class: Safe

Special Containment Procedures

SCP-8539 is to be kept in a 6x6 square meter containment cell, this cell should be painted in hyper light-absorbent paint, and viewing of any testing procedures should be done through non direct means. Nobody is to be inside of the holding cell, testing or not. Subjects that are being used to test SCP-8539 are to observe it through the viewing window, which can only be opened by a level 2 personnel or higher.

Description

SCP-8539 is a set of outdoor LED string lights, when fully stretched out, it can cover an area of 3 meters by 12 meters squared. They emit a warm, yellow colored light, and they constantly flash in alternating patterns. They are able to be turned off, but once on, they require no additional pattern to keep flashing or emitting light. The flashing cannot be turned off, altered, or changed in any way. Physical contact with SCP-8539 has no effect, however, observing SCP-8539's emitted light gives the viewer an immediate urge to "protect" it. These feelings seem to be a severe state of psychosis, with the viewer of SCP-8539 believing that living beings within a undefined range of SCP-8539 are constantly trying to destroy or harm it in some way. This state of psychosis wears off after 20-80 minutes.

Those viewing SCP-8539 seem to not be effected when the light is turned off, indicating that the light emitted by SCP-8539's LEDs are the actual anomaly, and not the physical object. This statement is backed up by the fact that the properties of SCP-8539 affects people through reflections. The anomalous properties seem to be limited by the viewer's own ability to accurately see the light emitted by SCP-8539, this is because tests have shown that people who believe they cannot see the light, commonly blind people or people with visual impairments, are not affected by SCP-8539.

Finally, those affected by SCP-8539, in conjunction with the aforementioned effects, seem to have their brain's limbic system impaired, specifically at the Amygdala and the Hypothalamus. This impairment seems automatically reverse itself after the effects of SCP-8539 wear off.
