Non-Anomalous Pinus elliottii Mycorrhiza

Special Containment Procedures: SCP-9775 spores, except those slated for preservation, are contained within Baseline Cold Storage Unit (bCSU) 013-C in Site-103. The SCP-9775-A research project is currently housed within Variable-Environ Isolated Containment (VEIC) greenhouse 0420-B in Site-103, which has been modified as follows:

Addition of adjoint laboratory space.
Hermetic sealing across the VEIC-laboratory complex.
Implementation of acroamatic autoclavation functionality.

Prior to personnel evacuation from, acroamatic abatement of, or introduction of new SCP-9775-A candidates to VEIC 0420-B, all SCP-9775 spores must be collected, counted, verified, and returned to bCSU 013-C. Furthermore, to reduce risk of cross-contact, VEIC 0420-B's sterilization cycle must be run between introductions of anomalous SCP-9775-A candidates.

VEIC 0420-B is currently configured to model a tropical moist broadleaf forest habitat, as found in the Guayanan Highlands. Testing of SCP-9775-A candidates must continue until SCP-9775-A is found. Under no circumstances may SCP-9775 be permitted extinction.

Immunodeficient or hypothermic staff must avoid proximity to SCP-9775 at all times.

Welcome back, everybody, to our search for an old fungus' long-lost partner! I'm Violet, but you can call me Vi, and today I'd like to take you on a tour of our greenhouse.

She opens the door to reveal a laboratory, sparse and newly furnished. Light streams in through plant-lined windows on the left, next to a door with gardening tools laid at its foot. A single computer takes up a small portion of the generous counterspace.

First is, of course, our lab! The one and only. Over the last year she's… kinda become like home, to me and to the rest of the team.

Noma-Anradh

Oh, I remember my first handling of the spores on this table… ugh I was so nervous! I was new, like all of you once were. Or maybe still are!

Noma-Anradh

It dies down, eventually. You wouldn't be here if it didn't.

Noma-Anradh

Just… trust in the process, alright? There's so much to learn, but I believe in you. We believe in you.

She stares intensely at the camera for a beat longer than expected. A moment later, she realizes, and turns away in slight embarassment.

Noma-Anradh

Here, let me show you something.

She opens up a drawer just to the right of the computer's tower, and pulls out a tallysheet.

This helps us keep track of all the spores we use, to make sure we're never missing one. See here, one marked as "destroyed"? I forgot to recover it from the greenhouse before running the autoclave…

But it's okay! We recovered. We still have extra. Mistakes happen, and I'm still working here!

Noma-Anradh

I guess what I'm trying to say is, don't worry. It'll all be okay. I know it will.

⬑ Supplement 9775.Α

Description: SCP-9775 is the fungus Sclerocystis perobscura (formerly Glomus perobscurum), a species unknown to the superveil scientific community. SCP-9775 is an obligate-symbiont arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus with close phylogenetic relation to other such fungi, with its plant symbionts collectively designated SCP-9775-A. SCP-9775 is hypothesized to produce a novel antimemetic compound, designated SCP-9775-B, when in mycorrhizal mutualism. While the effect of this compound in nature is mild, concentrated solutions are able to increase its effect to human scales. Preliminary research on SCP-9775-B has revealed multiple promising potential uses of the compound, including antimemetic masking of Foundation assets or use as a new Class A "General Retrograde" Amnestic.

No instances of SCP-9775-A are currently known to the Foundation, either in the wild or in captivity. As a result, every attempt at germinating SCP-9775 has failed, and the species is considered extinct in the wild.

9775 is an AMF, which is supremely interesting because…

She pauses for a second, blank-faced.

Right, sorry! AMF stands for arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus. AMF are typically obligate symbionts with specific species of plants, different for each species of AMF. They won't grow without their plant friend!

Noma-Anradh

That's why we're on the search for plants. We can't grow it without the correct plant, and we have no idea what that plant is!

Noma-Anradh

Now, the reason for why they're like that is really the most interesting bit. AMF wind their hyphae into plant roots, eventually penetrating their cortical cells!

Noma-Anradh

There, they'll form a tree-like structure called an arbuscule, through which they exchange resources with the plant! Don't worry, the plant likes it. In fact, they like it so much that some plants can't even grow without their mycorrhizal partners!

Mutualism in nature is… so fascinating. Two completely different creatures with completely different histories, coming together to form a whole greater than their parts, a tiny communal society of their own…

Addendum 9775.1

Discovery

SCP-9775 was initially discovered in 1946 in land now constituting Saikai National Park in Japan. In the wake of the atomic bombing of Nagasaki, Foundation agents were deployed to the area in order to ensure that the event had not precipitated the creation of additional anomalous objects.

A previously-unknown antimemetic effect was discovered by Researcher Douglas Helmann, having been prescribed a taper dose of mnestics, during a game of "Eye Spy" while on a morning walk with Agent Akira Locke. Following his field report, a team was sent out to perform further analysis. SCP-9775 spores, still carrying a weak antimemetic effect from residiual SCP-9775-B, were recovered from the soil through wet-sieving and decanting before being brought back to Site-19 for controlled testing.

At the time of discovery, mycorrhizal fungi were still poorly understood. Lack of foresight prevented the isolation or recovery of any instances of SCP-9775-A, leading to a complete failure of spore germination in the lab. The project was eventually abandoned and the spores consigned to cold storage, until their recent rediscovery during a routine storage audit.

Addendum 9775.2

Unbalanced Exchange Hypothesis

Analysis of a soil sample sent alongside the spores was able to provide insight into the evolutionary benefit of SCP-9775-B and its mechanism of operation.

Current consensus among the SCP-9775 research team holds that SCP-9775-B was evolved in order to facilitate mycorrhizal parasitism in the form of trade extortion on the part of SCP-9775. Mycorrhizal fungi typically engage in trade with their host, providing soil nutrients in exchange for energy and carbon. Introduction of SCP-9775-B to existing mycorrhizal mutualisms, however, disrupts this pattern. Uptake by either side disrupts their ability to track trades, resulting in oversupply of their respective commodity. It is hypothesized that SCP-9775-B is a secondary metabolite, produced and selectively applied by SCP-9775 in order to extract more nutrients and energy from SCP-9775-A than it would otherwise be able to, in effect facilitating a transition from mutualism to biotrophic parasitism.

Due to SCP-9775-B's ability to affect all three major eukaryotic kingdoms of life (animal, plant, and fungi), the mechanism through which it operates is currently thought to be abstract in nature, acting on the concept of information and entropy rather than any specific information-storing medium.

She stays kneeling, staring, for a whole minute.

She's beautiful but… she's not the one I'm most excited for.

She shifts to a small sprout nearby.

Urtica flectens, the mimic nettle. Takes on some of the qualities of anything it pricks…

Every new recruit asks the question at some point. Why do we contain? If these objects must not be left to the public's eye, would it not be safer and cheaper to destroy them outright? Don't the Global Occult Coalition have a point?

By now, you all have heard countless examples of an anomaly neutralized, only to come back twice as dangerous. I won't waste your time regaling you with more of the same. What I am trying to convey, here, is something a lot more subtle, that will hopefully convince the stragglers among you. It is for that reason I petitioned for the declassification of this file, and encouraged the team to go ahead with Rhizoquest: to show you the other side of containment, what I see as one of the Foundation's most noble persuits.

The loss of a species is something inconcievably vast. Millions of years of specialization, an entirely unique kind of being, unlike any other, robbed of its future. Every life it would have lived, every one of its marvels to behold, all the good it could have done…

It saddens me to even think about.

Despite this, however, you would be hard-pressed to find anybody willing to fight to rescue a fungus from the brink. Some conservationists talk of the unloved animals, who quietly pass on away from the public eye, as if the problem was unique. As if any species deserves to live over any other, just because we see ourselves more in them.

It's evident here more than anywhere: containment is the urge to preserve, not to sequester. This desire to rescue, to hold and nurture and ensure survival: that is what separates us from the GOC. They are the hunters and poachers of the vulnerable behind the veil, but we are the zoos and nature preserves. Without the Foundation, Sclerocystis perobscura and many, many others would have died in the dark. One day, by our efforts, they will once again live in the light.

Metaphorically speaking, of course. It lives in the dirt.
