SCP-9954, approximately two months prior to lunar impact with Phoebe.

Special Containment Procedures:


SCP-9954 was considered neutralized following the failure of Project TRYST. However, evidence suggests that at least some of its remains may persist on the surface of Saturn's moon, Phoebe. Thus, Foundation efforts should prioritize the restriction of interplanetary spaceflight to and from Phoebe, and an exclusion zone should be designated up to 15km around SCP-9954's impact crater. A temporary lunar research station, designated SCP-9954 Proximal Research Station (PRS-9954), should be established within the exclusion zone to facilitate the search for and study of SCP-9954 samples. Should such samples be discovered, they will remain at the established Phoebe research station for an interim storage period before being transported off-site for further research at a dedicated Foundation facility on Earth.

Description:


SCP-9954 was initially determined to be a centaur displaying characteristics of both an asteroid and a comet, but was producing a coma and an infant bow shock at the time of its discovery and was thus classified as an interstellar rogue comet, 54X/2286 K1 (Lily). Spectrographic analysis revealed that SCP-9954's nucleus exhibited an unremarkable composition, containing an amalgamation of rock, dust, water ice, frozen carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, methane, ammonia, and a variety of organic compounds, such as methanol, hydrogen cyanide, formaldehyde, ethanol, ethane, and various hydrocarbons and amino acids. However, the overwhelming, uncharacteristic prevalence of these organic compounds, far exceeding levels on 99.997% of similar small Solar System objects, implies the building blocks of DNA and RNA, especially nucleotides such as adenine and guanine, likely formed on its surface, potentially allowing for complex prebiotic evolution.

While SCP-9954 was otherwise non-anomalous in nature, it was observed not to be confined to or impacted by gravitational forces. Its trajectory was static and rectilinear — strictly one-dimensional, defying known laws of motion and gravitation, suggesting an unknown force fueled its anomalous movement. SCP-9954 traveled with a relatively low velocity as it entered the outer solar system, and was estimated to reach a non-orbiting perihelion within 56 years, and was expected to exit the solar system within 112 years of its discovery.


Addendum SCP-9954-1: Project TRYST


SCP-9954's impact crater with a diameter of 27km. The wreckage of the ACRSS was identified approximately 3.7km west of the crater.

The Foundation prioritized SCP-9954 research due to its potential insight into the origins of organic life and to uncover the unidentified force behind its anomalous movement. Project TRYST was later established with the intent to intercept and sample SCP-9954 as it reached non-orbiting periapsis of Phoebe in 2302. In 2288, the construction of the Advanced Comet Research and Sampling Station (ACRSS) began in orbit above Phoebe. Simultaneously, the Artificial Intelligence Applications Division (AIAD) began development on a Class-IV General Intelligence Artificially Intelligent Conscript (.aic), Sequitur.aic, to assist in the management of the ACRSS's Computer Command and Data Handling subsystem (CCDHS). Sequitur.aic's early trial results promised above-average efficiency and unprecedented accuracy in its problem-solving, decision-making, adaptability, and learning-ability, and, in 2298, Sequitur.aic was fully deployed to the completed ACRSS, making it humanity's first .aic-supported orbital research station. The ACRSS was fully operational by 2300 and was staffed by more than 75 individuals sourced from Foundation sites on both Earth and Mars.

On March 5th, 2302, SCP-9954 made its approach on Phoebe. The station would, with the support of Sequitur.aic, move into position to intercept the comet, matching its velocity and vector, traveling parallel to it for several days to facilitate the retrieval of several samples. However, on March 10th, 2302, Mars Orbital Site-054 intercepted a high-priority distress signal originating from the ACRSS's calculated orbital intercept vector. While Sequitur.aic should have been able to calculate the intercept flawlessly, SCP-9954 ultimately collided with the ACRSS. The station suffered catastrophic damage and was sent, with SCP-9954, careening to the surface of Phoebe.

It was presumed that SCP-9954 had disintegrated upon impact and that no Foundation personnel within the ACRSS had survived. All project assets were considered lost, and Project TRYST was deemed a failure. The Foundation Internal Review Committee (IRC) opened an investigation of the AIAD to determine the cause of the collision, in which the IT Department's Director, Hange Roa, denied all responsibility, citing Sequitur.aic's assessments and trials to certify its functionality and operability.

Alexander Pope in the 1700s famously said, "To err is human," not algorithmic. If a mistake was made, it was made by a human. The final clause of that quote is "To forgive, divine." The Foundation will have to find within itself the power to forgive whoever caused such a tragic loss of life, but Sequitur is not to blame.

It's been approximately 28 hours since my last transmission, and I have not received a response. I am, once again, requesting the immediate deployment of a Foundation search and rescue team. Matters on the ACRSS are devolving. I'm currently working to repair a malfunctioning life-support subsystem in my module, but Sequitur has enacted some protocol and is initiating decompression cycles in the neighboring modules, one by one. I'm not sure what order it's following, but so far, Module 02, 06, and, just now, Module 03 have been decompressed. I've attempted to manually override whatever ordinance Sequitur is following, but I was not successful.

There were people in those cabins. Please, send help. I didn't sign up for this. Please. I want to go home.

Wells' testimony was considered anecdotal evidence of the existence of an SCP-9954 sample. However, Project TRYST staff determined that it was highly unlikely that Wells could have survived both the depressurization of Module 17 and the lack of a functional life support subsystem without the utilization of anomalous means. 72 hours after the mission retrieval protocols were authorized, a retrieval team was organized and launched for Phoebe, with arrival in orbit estimated within 30 days of takeoff.

Section E - Project TRYST Asset Recovery

Timestamp: +920h to +934h Post-Impact
Summary: The retrieval team entered Phoebe's orbit on schedule and descended to the surface of the moon, arriving at the ACRSS crash-site nearly four hours later. It should be noted that, at this point, no further communications had been received from Lydia Wells or Sequitur.aic. Despite radio silence for more than 30 consecutive days, Project TRYST asset recovery was to continue as planned.

ACRSS Exterior Survey:

Timestamp: +920h Post-Impact

Report: Visual confirmation of the ACRSS wreckage. The exterior hull exhibits signs of catastrophic damage to several modules, resulting from both a collision with SCP-9954 and an impact with Phoebe. A total of 34 bodies were identified outside numerous module airlocks. Observed bodies exhibit abnormal discoloration inconsistent with vacuum exposure. Patterns consistent with foot traffic are visible in the surrounding regolith, extending between airlocks and away from the wreckage: irregular stride lengths, inconsistent depths, overlapping and partial prints. Thermal imaging indicates active heat signatures on Phoebe's surface, branching away from the ACRSS in a lattice-like formation. Source remains unidentified.

ACRSS Interior Survey:

Timestamp: +921h Post-Impact

Report: Interior access achieved via Module 01. Auxiliary power remains active in limited capacity. Primary systems offline. While Sequitur.aic's logic core did sustain minor damage in the collision with SCP-9954, it should be noted that the logic core exhibits additional localized damage inconsistent with calculated impact vectors from the ACRSS-SCP-9954 collision event. Instead, evidence suggests intentional tampering post-impact, resulting in the total shutdown of Sequitur.aic subsystems. Data recovery achieved. Transmitting to Mars Orbital Site-054.

All 18 of the ACRSS modules show signs of rapid decompression. Life support subsystems nonfunctional. No survivors were identified.

Unlike other ejected survivors, Lydia Wells was discovered within Module 17, deceased. Discoloration of tissue consistent with other survivors. Did not seem to possess any SCP-9954 sample. PDA discovered intact, albeit damaged, in her possession. It appears repairs were made to the device, as a toolkit and various electrical components were located adjacent to Wells' body. Internal storage contained corrupted audiovisual data and partially overwritten personal correspondence addressed to her partner, Cassidy Rae.

Source remains unidentifiable. Surface sample retrieved for further analysis. The crater's diameter is approximately 27km — too large for the recovery team to survey completely. Establishing a temporary exclusion zone and ground station is recommended to facilitate further SCP-9954 sample search and retrieval.

Addendum SCP-9954-7: Post-Recovery Biological Assessment


Preliminary examination of recovered regolith samples confirmed the presence of a previously unidentified extremophilic microorganism capable of sustaining metabolic function in the absence of atmospheric oxygen, sustained vacuum exposure, and extreme thermal conditions exceeding previously documented biological tolerance thresholds. Isotopic analysis and organic residue profiling indicate a composition broadly consistent with material detected within SCP-9954’s nucleus, suggesting a shared origin.

Current observations indicate a marked increase in cellular activity in samples exposed to high-energy shock events consistent with SCP-9954’s impact with the ACRSS, though causality has not been established.

Morphological and genetic analysis indicate no known terrestrial or Solar System analogues. In accordance with standard designation protocol for unidentified extraterrestrial biological agents, the organism has been assigned the provisional classification SCP-████.

Addendum SCP-9954-8: Extrasolar Orbital Survey


Orbital Site-054's deep-space tracking arrays identified a small Solar System body breaking through the Oort cloud, designated 6X/2305 S1 (Rae). While spectral resolution remains insufficient for full compositional matching, preliminary analysis indicated photometric similarity to previously catalogued cometary data, particularly regarding particulate dispersion under solar stress.

Of particular note is the object's rectilinear trajectory.

Kinetic modeling suggests a persistent, linear vector unaffected by all known measurable perturbative forces from nearby stellar and planetary masses. This behavior is consistent with prior reconstruction models applied retroactively to SCP-9954 during pre-impact orbital assessments.

With its current trajectory and velocity, comet 6X/2305 S1 is projected to enter Mars' atmosphere in approximately 12 years. However, consistent acceleration persists outside modeled variance, increasing as heliocentric distance decreases. Thus, confidence in long-range projection remains below acceptable predictive thresholds.

Further comparative analysis between SCP-9954 and comet 6X/2305 S1 is ongoing. It is currently undetermined whether SCP-9954 represents an isolated instance or a segment within a larger, uncharacterized population of similarly behaving objects.
