To whomever has found these words.

Item #: SCP-8309

Object Class: Safe

SCP-8309 in its containment cell.

Special Containment Procedures: SCP-8309 is contained in a standard humanoid containment cell. Surveillance is reviewed daily weekly monthly, and is to focus on the appearance of handwritten material within its cell. Any such material is to be retrieved immediately, scanned, translated, and forwarded to the assigned research team for review. Original copies will be sent to archives for secure storage.

Due to ostensible compliance and absence of violent behavior, SCP-8309 is permitted supervised access to Site-138’s garden for up to 3 hours daily. During these excursions, identical material retrieval protocols apply. Personnel are advised to maintain peripheral observation while minimizing direct visual contact.

Description: SCP-8309 is a humanoid entity measuring 1.90 m in height, outfitted with Swiss Armed Forces–issue equipment consisting of a TAZ 83 rain cape, Sharktec-CP gloves, and KS 90 footwear. Its face is obscured by a black gas mask of unknown manufacture with tinted lenses preventing visual of its features.

SCP-8309 consistently avoids direct human visual contact, maintaining maximum distance and utilizing cover when possible. Although it offers no visible resistance, it is believed to deliberately induce a telepathic aversion in personnel attempting physical contact, preventing the action. Additionally, SCP-8309 is capable of detecting nearby individuals through opaque barriers; this ability appears imprecise at large distances, as evidenced by eyewitness sightings near Maules, Switzerland, which led to its initial containment.

Attempts to interview SCP-8309 have failed. However, it produces handwritten letters in French from within its outer garment. These display advanced literacy and calligraphy, and serve as the primary channel of communication. (All recovered correspondence has been automatically annexed in the Addendum.)

During authorized garden access, SCP-8309 initially remained stationary, staring beyond site fences. More recently, it has been observed mushroom foraging and providing grain to field mice. This behavioral shift occurred following a notable change in its letters.

Transcript:

To the warden, and the pawns who scurry at her heel.

You have seized a wanderer from the quiet paths, shackling him in your restraints and dragging him into your fortress. He who once trod as a monastic spirit beneath emerald vaults, harming no more than the bisoton that whispers across the ripening wheat. He who accepted only the humble alms of the forest, and inscribed no wounds upon your streets.

And still, as though such trespass were not glut enough, your court now orbits him like vultures upon a fallen doe, demanding that he jest for your amusement. Well, know I shall not let you gaze beneath his veil, neither upon his body, nor upon his heart, for his dignity is sworn in covenant to none but myself.

Additional: Finally, a breakthrough! It can communicate! Not by the method I’d have expected or preferred, but it’ll serve. Tell Jared to keep the camera on in case it drops more of these.

Transcript:

So, you unseal but the narrowest of your gates, in hopes to hear my voice.

I pace your manicured grove, where trees stand regimented identical to the iron bars of this cage, but I see the trench beneath the bait. A morsel proffered not from kindness, but to lull the game into the diminishing of its guard.

I shall accept your gesture draped in guise of grace, and with deftness I shall tiptoe the snares you have sown amidst the meadows. For a sparrow who has tasted the unbarbed woodland of pines, can sing for no garden save where breeze alone keeps watch.

Additional: All that matters is that it's taken the bait. Forward this to Security so we can get authorization to continue.

Transcript:

By what unholy means do your lackeys unearth their answers? What blasphemous sight do they wield, to trespass unbidden into sanctuaries I have kept sealed? Was it not sufficient to imprison the boughs, that you must now drive your talons into the roots beneath the soil? Was your pride pierced by a scarecrow who could not fool the raven?

The quiet I keep is not born of frailty, but of choice. Every word withheld is a wall; every silence a moat. Each pick you cast at this citadel strips away the last of your dignity, not mine. I have watched your circus assemble, leaning forward to gawk at a clown you believe you’ve unmasked. While you sit in your tower, spilling coffers into the hands of mercenaries fattened on salary. You embellish your heartless fortress in minted opulence, while beyond these walls, where gold would heal, the peasantry bleeds to pay their king his coin.

Do not speak me as one of your kin.

Additional: Well done, team! Looks like we’ve struck the right vein. Keep pressing this line.

Additional: Gottverdammi! Just hand these off to Archives. If they think it’s worth a look, they can pass it back up the chain. I’m not dragging myself in early because our subject decided to pen the letter equivalent of a middle finger at four in the morning.

Transcript:

Through these long cycles of light and shadow, I have watched trees carved for show and grass beheaded for uniformity. And yet, every spring, the flowers still bloom. This tells me that somewhere, someone might care. Though in their own fractured way.

Through false pages, I have wearied my captors of me. Yet still, these words do not vanish into the void. I have come to know they are kept. Nested deep in the iron veins of this infernal machine, awaiting eyes who cared enough to find them.

Let the embers of these lines light your candle, and chase the mist from your mind.

I dwell in your cell, torn from the realm you have long forgotten, where a symphony yet breathes. You dwell in your fortress, among men who pin trophies upon their suits, and trade one chain for another. Your walls are as thick as mine, and within them echoes only the metronome of footsteps on tiles. Yet, it takes but one stone to trouble the water, sending out the ripples of tolerance and liberty. The hand that cast it knowing its banks will never lie still again.

I shall say no more. I will wait here for time to sand these walls to dust, or for change to rest its hand upon your shoulder. And when these gates hang open, whether by mercy or by ruin, I shall walk beyond them, and lose myself once more among the trees, my mind at peace.
