Act three seems to link to the sandbox page instead of the normal one NO MATTER WHAT I DO.

IM TRYING TO FIX IT PLEASE JUST BEAR WITH BE LDDHDJFHD

Digital style, digital hate
Digital god, digital pain
Digital violence, digital world
Digital boy meets digital girl
Digital silence, digital yell
Digital heaven, digital hell
Digital start, digital end
Digital birth, digital death

This article has been in the works for around the last five months, but was almost entirely written in the last month. It's definitely been the most taxing thing I've ever written, and I will be sure to take a very very long break after this.

And now, some acknowledgements

  • I would like to thank DFAstillo91 for being of wonderful assistance during this process, for providing me with many awesome ideas such as the Washington Job and the ReagAngel, and for writing a good portion of the finale.
  • I would like to thank Saig for writing the original Reaganpunk tale, which has absolutely nothing to do with this, but inspired this entire article
  • I would like to thank xexnoncores, switchitea and Heck_Tech, and many more that i cannot remember for providing critique
  • I would like to extend extra special thanks to Heck_Tech for being the best moral support I could ever wish for.
  • I would also like to thank Mister_Toasty for being my very best friend on this site. You're a great author, and I'll miss not seeing your works anymore.

BONUS: Things I wanted to add but couldn't because of time constraints:

  • a second pathway you could take while doing the heist, instead of having to go to the laboratory
  • a crazed humanoid anomaly snatching the bag of thumbs and you having to chase it down
  • uh, idk, THREE OTHER INTERACTIVE PATHS ASIDE OF BRAXTON'S Á LA 6500, WHICH I SOMEHOW THOUGHT I COULD GET DONE ON TIME??
  • a connection to SCP-8886 which i 100% could have added but i simply entirely forgot
  • Henry Kissinger as Jesus (i'm not kidding, early versions of the concept had this)
  • The Crucible being a device that retroactively removes Reagan from ever having been president
  • A very, very long tangent about the Trickle down Phenomenon
  • You being presented with the choice to give up Laufey for the Crucible
  • Umlaut (from the Washington Job) coming back as a black-hole-headed MC&D mercenary. i'll definitely be using this idea later.

Preferred slots:

  • Lowest available 900X slot
  • 9666
  • 9500
  • highest 9X99
  • 9404

This is the answer to the question
This is the sound of the truth
This is the answer to the question
There is nothing you can do

I'm going to novote, this was very well done with some great moments, but I didn't find the overall story or the interactive luck based style that interesting.

Criminally underrated. This is well made. It looks great, the gameplay is fun, and I find myself replaying it in my free time. Really cool.

The most interesting thing about the article is its new take on interactive article (as far as I've read). The Chancemaker and implant systems are really interesting because they add additional strategy to many decisions. For example, because of my high luck implant, I can choose the option that seems more luck dependant to increase my chance of success. This really makes the player feel more in control of the outcome of every action than other interactive articles like 8005 or PatGD 001, which is great. However, I do have some issues. The implants seem to be fairly linear (+5 luck in the elevator on the corpse), which may lead to it being repetitive on repeat playthroughs. There are also way too many stat types. This will lead to many stats almost never coming into play, making the implants feel less valuable. Perhaps the amount of stats could be lowered?

As for the actual story, I don't care much for any of the characters. None of the heist teams deaths really mean anything, since we don't spend much time with them. I liked Laufey's story about his dad, but that wasn't even real. Maybe more time could be spent in act 1 with the team? Also Moloch isn't a character at all. Overall, this isn't that big of an issue with the article, but it is a bit unfortunate.

I also like the worldbuilding a lot, but not much of it is seen outside of the explanation from Claude. I like the part where Moloch conjures up a pillow for the player, showing that the cyber world has no scarcity, but nothing like it is in the rest of the article (unless I missed something or I chose a different option). This also isn't a big deal, but I just wish the interesting worldbuilding came up more.

Act 3 also feels a bit rushed. The scene in the Underminer outpost is really short, and we barely see the underminers. Secretary's betrayal is also really quick. I do like the Reagen parts though. Possibly cutting out the Underminer outpost and having Braxton find the book on his own could make the act feel less rushed?

While I may sound negative, most of my complaints are ultimately nit-picks. This article is absolutely wonderful and one of my favourites in the contest.

(This isn't crit, I just need to vent (unseriously). I failed like 7 times because I had exactly the check requirement, but since it wasn't specified what to do in that scenario, I rolled my Chancemaker (<10 round down and fail, >10 found up and succeed (no i didn't plan for getting 10)) and got 1, so that was a bit (unseriously) frustrating.)

Optional technical details:

Most of this is comprised of large vats housing chemical reactions, penumatic pumps,

pneumatic

Interrogation of underminer:

"See? you bureaucrats are all the same. You pretend to care about people until it's no longer convenient. The Aministration isn't much better."

Administration

Same scene after being asked what the crucible is after asking where the crucible came from:

"It's virus, simply put," she responds. "The Hammer's consciousness is split between 55 pocket realities-"

Shouldn't this say It's a virus?

When showing the hologram of the fascility that they will be infiltrating:

Hayward taps on his tablet some more, before several points on the layour light up red.

Pretty self explanatory:

"Yesterday, we got several operatives to… liberate the thumbs of the chip owners. Fingerprint obtained."

Would it not be multiple Fingerprints?

On the act 1 to 2 transition page, there is a broken block quote near the bottom.

Staying in bed in act 2:

Tell me one of the things I just listen that you know are 100% accounted for.

Does this sentence have missing or additional words?

In the same scene:

We don't talk about the Washington job, Braxton."

Is there an additional quotation mark, or is this sentence missing one?

Talking to the secretary on the ship:

She smiles again. This time, it's less reassuring. "Feel free to try.

Is there supposed to be a quotation mark at the end?

This isn't a mistake (I think) but what if a roll is equal to the skill requirement? It's never specified on any of the skill checks or offset 2 where the mechanic is introduced.

Lab after the underminer is shot:

The door you came in through isn't usable, on account of the army on the other side. There's another door on the other side. Going through, it's now a more medical laboratory with a plethora of equipment.

Does this have additional or missing words?

After passing the combat check by attacking the infected guard before the elevator:

As the creature leaps at you, you leap into it, grabbing it by the chest and tearing it down. As it goes down, it grabs at your leg, squeezing until skins starts to tear.

Should "skin" or "start" have an extra "s"?

After seeing the Reagan statue:

"We had an anomaly like this for the longest time." you explain. "I was confiscated by the Administration during the digitization. I think I know where it went."

Shouldn't this be It was?

Same scene:

"We need to…" you swallow. Your mouth is suddenly so dry. "Time our blinks. So that line of sight isn't broken. W

What is the extra "W" supposed to be?

Transition page from act 2 to 3 scp 29700 file:

However, no effort can currently be made to precent this.

Is "precent" supposed to be "prevent"?

Same scene:

Under analysis, SCP-92700 is near-identical to O-negative juman blood,

Is this meant to be human, or is it a separate species?

Same scene:

He was the one that made it?

Oh my god.

That asshole, he pleaded ignorance when he asked him. That he had no fucking idea.

Jesus.

And then he made it a bioweapon.

How many has it killed, Claude. How many?

Who is responding to this?

Start of act 3:

The walls around you are drab concrete, and you're laying on some kind of antique, but extremely damaged, wooden bet. You're wrapped in several layers of multicoloured, wooly blankets. Evidently hand-knit.

Is this supposed to be wooden bed?

After going through the portal with the underminers:

You're standing on a wide metal walkwaty maybe 5 metres in width, stretching on for around 50 metres in length. There's no handrails, which makes you just a little concerned.

walkway

After the secretary reagangel attacks you:

"I also immortal! In fact, this body that I'm inhabiting right now is already dead! There's nothing you can do to meaninfully harm me! Nothing!"

I am also and meaningfully

This is pretty impressive, and I like what you did with the interactive aspects, however I can't say the same for the story itself. Some of the options that I can click on didn't really excite me and they didn't make me go "oh wow I like the different routes with each decision I make and seeing how these characters react with the decisions I make." I wasn't very engaged with the plot or the characters unfortunately. I like the effort you put in here, but for now I'm leaving this at a novote.

I think you already know most of my thoughts, so I'll only add new stuff:

-The D20 rolls didn't come into play nearly as much as they should have. I actually like this concept, cumbersome as it is, and I wish I had seen more of it. The ones that were there seemed a bit too easy to win (or maybe my D20 was just rolling in my favor), and I feel like there could've been a few more options (like major success if you rolled high, major failure if you rolled low, etc).

-Echoing a lack of care for most of the cast. They all felt like cardboard and hardly had anything that made them stand out. I know, deadlines. Also echoing how few of my choices really seemed to matter.

-The "black veins" anomaly is nice, but this feels like another good idea that was "wasted" (or at least underutilized) by being inserted into another SCP article. I forgive it since it does seem to add to the story a little, but honestly I feel like the original anomaly and overall story were strong enough to stand on their own. At least you didn't try to cross time-traveling historical figures with a piece of Mekhane.

If I'm being honest, I would give this one seven John Hinckleys out of ten, and part of that is due to simple spelling/grammar issues. Even so, the sheer effort it took to make all this in a short period of time is remarkable, so shut up and take my +1.

Wow, this was a WILD ride. Reaganpunk lives up to the hype. This was an actiony, fun, bizarre, surprising story with very charming and just as badass characters, a pretty sick premise, and a good execution, not to mention the of course super cool visuals. The humor did land for me, I never really felt lost and it kept me engaged throughout, so in my books, that's a pretty easy +1.

– hide block

That being said, the later parts of Reaganpunk do feel a bit rushed. Other than the many typos (there's three I noticed on the third real offset alone), there's also an unclosed blockquote on the second offset, and I ran into two non-game over dead ends (but there might be more, I didn't explore every path):

  • Rolling Reflexes > 12 after failing to disarm the guards upon first entering the base.
  • Rolling Combat > 30 after "Kick it away" for the freezer.

Also, while I think every character does have strong moments, they also don't feel terribly fleshed-out or developed at all. Maybe it's different for other path choices, but it certainly felt like the team's Underminer did nothing but stand around and be snarky before dying, and the other characters (other than Laufey and maybe the Secretary, which had more satisfying arcs) didn't really do much either. Like I don't think the actual character development was enough to justify anyone's feelings towards each other (especially Laufey and the Underminer, as well as Braxton's sadness about his team that he barely knows). They did die gloriously, though, I'll give 'em that. Moloch and Reagan were also somewhat disappointing, though I'll acknowledge that this is still very good and awesome for such an ambitious project on a deadline, and the characters do feel mostly distinct even if I wish there was a lot more to them than we're given.

I think storywise this would have too many issues for me to upvote as a linear story, but the interactive element mitigates that somewhat. The dice rolling was a fun mechanic, though I will say the options never specify what to do when rolling exactly the number. +1

Never in my life have I failed so many d20 rolls by exactly 1.

This article looks really cool! I put my window in full-screen so I could get the full effect, really immerse myself in it. I really like the ending, too. It's really well written, and it somehow manages to be bleak, cathartic, and a commentary on the way even the vilest demagogues are often really just puppets of a much larger and harder-to-eliminate force. The matter-of-factness of the document describing this horrific and absurd world is also, as the kids say, peak.

That said, it's very clear that this was rushed, especially in act 3. Such is k-con writing, I suppose. The things that suffer most from that are the Underminers, who get basically no development, and the atmosphere of the Cyberspace itself. I feel like a facsimile universe ruled by Ronald Reagan should have a very distinct and oppressive atmosphere, which is present in the Foundation facility and to a lesser extent in the vault, but mostly absent elsewhere. I want to know what Moloch's deal is, and I want to really see what this gnarly capitalist cyberhell looks like.

Lastly, I have mixed feelings about the dice rolls. It was fun and kept me engaged, but at the same time it seemed like most failed rolls would just kill me and boot me back to the last checkpoint. That's no good, because if I just restart from someplace else, then the only real consequence of my failure was frustration, and not anything that really mattered to the narrative.

I am waffling between an upvote and a novote.
